Why Keywords Matter

Every job description contains a set of skills, tools, and phrases that the hiring team cares about most. ATS systems score your resume on how many of these appear in your document. Humans then do the same scan mentally.

Getting keywords right means passing both filters.

Finding the Right Keywords

Start with the job description. Read it three times:

**First pass:** Circle every hard skill (Python, Salesforce, Six Sigma).
**Second pass:** Underline soft skills and behaviors (cross-functional, stakeholder management).
**Third pass:** Note repeated words — repetition signals priority.

Also scan 3–5 similar postings. Keywords that appear across multiple listings are industry-standard; make sure they're in your resume.

Where to Place Keywords

**Work Experience:** The most powerful section. Weave keywords naturally into your bullet points as actions and results.

**Skills Section:** A clean list of 10–15 hard skills is appropriate and expected. Don't pad it.

**Summary (if you use one):** 2–3 sentences that echo the job title and 2–3 top requirements.

What Not to Do

**Don't stuff keywords in white text.** ATS systems have caught this for years. It will get you flagged or banned.

**Don't use every keyword if it's not true.** Misrepresenting skills leads to uncomfortable interviews and failed offers.

**Don't repeat the same keyword 10 times.** Most ATS only need to see it once or twice. Over-repetition looks unnatural to human reviewers.

The Frequency Rule

Most ATS count each keyword once regardless of repetition. Your goal is coverage (hitting all the important keywords), not density.
